Wakoucha Yabukita refers to a Japanese black tea (often called “Japanese red tea”) crafted specifically from the Yabukita cultivar. While Yabukita is best known for producing the majority of Japanese green teas, it has also proven successful in the creation of distinctive black teas.
Unlike the bolder, more astringent profiles of Indian or Sri Lankan black teas, Wakoucha tends to be lighter, milder, and more delicate. Its flavor is often floral, honeyed, occasionally fruity or malty, and typically enjoyed without milk or sugar.
Processing involves withering, rolling, oxidation, and drying—similar to other black teas—but with techniques tailored to Japanese cultivars and their intended taste profiles.
